SPRINT RACING IN TASMANIA
The first Tasmanian Sprint Race conducted in Northern Tasmania was held at the abandoned Longford TB race track in 1979. The race was sponsored by Papanui Paint Horses. Full results are not available. However, organiser Wayne Graham recalls the race was won by the Appaloosa stallion Smokey Feathers owned by Arthur Migliorini from Devonport. Second was a Paint horse gelding owned by Papanui Stud.
If anyone has the full field and results we would appreciate them being forwarded to the NSRA to record for posterity.
The race was attended by Noel Cook, probably President of the AQHA at the time and the late Max Hayes from the Australian Appaloosa Association. Current NSRA President Wayne Graham organised the racing for the group that soon after became the Tasmanian Western Horse Association (TWHA).
In 1981 & 1982 the TWHA conducted further Sprint Racing at the old Brighton race track in Southern Tasmania.
Again few records were kept and the TWHA is long gone but Wayne Graham recalls that the Quarter Horse Withcanya by Withit and owned by Papanui Stud won in 1981.
It is not know if any further Sprint racing has taken place in Tasmania.
